Charcoal Drawing Of Woman With Straight Black Hair.
I did this sketch in charcoal. I drew it while I was sitting in a doughnut shop.
I was having a hard time trying to see where the tip of my charcoal pencil was touching the paper. It seemed that wherever I wanted to draw a line it was off somehow. Then I looked up and saw that the light was out above me, so I was working in a shadow corner of the restaurant. I kept lifting my glasses so look through the bottom half and I was getting my nose right down to the paper. No doubt people thought there was a nut case in the store.

It turned out nicely. I always say save the fun stuff for last and so I did the first 95% of the picture without hair. I was surprised at how little medium I needed on the page. I did a little line here and there then went straight to my blending stub; I was drawing as much with the stub as with the pencil.
I was very happy with the eyes. My resource material showed dark eyes but when they were half way shaded they seemed done. The scarf was in the resource material but I just used the texture of the scarf without giving detail. It gives nice contrast. The highlights in the hair were fun. First the highlights were mapped out lightly in a medium pencil then the remainder of the hair was filled in with dark charcoal pencil with details in the shiny area added, last I used a kneaded erasure to pull out a few lines of white.
