I started with an hb graphite pencil and then used a stub to blend some to make an underdrawing of the face. I then used a darker pencil and moved on from there to several charcoal pencils to deepen the values in the face. I worked out the hair almost as an afterthought. I used a white charcoal to add some highlights, the paper was white, (it doesn't show well), so the white was only a half value but I think it worked.
I was trying to get the contrast of the hair and the dark shadows in the face she had brown hair but I gave it a lighter value to strengthen the contrast. I wanted the drawing to look like a drawing so I kept some of the pencil work rough and refrained from using the blending stub so much.
I wanted the face to be rougher than it turned out but It seems to work.
I hope you enjoyed seeing my work. Thanks for taking the time to look.
